Clifford Chi

Hi! My name’s Clifford Chi, and I’m a bro satire writer with soul. My scripts are about young, confused dudes who glom onto the social institutions that define bro culture — like fraternities, religion, and sports — but eventually evolve beyond them and finally start the search for their true identity.

Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, I was the token Asian kid. So I did whatever I could to fit in with my white friends. Especially if it made me seem like a bro. In high school, I was a baseball-obsessed jock who took pride in getting B’s in math class (my Dad is a math professor). In college, I was a fireball-guzzling frat boy. Then a “cool” evangelical Christian. And then an overly ambitious tech bro (I went through a lot of phases in college).

It wasn’t until I studied abroad in Edinburgh, Scotland that I finally embraced the most important part of my identity — being Asian American. For the first time in my life, I was a part of an all-Asian friend group. And my Asian Gang taught me just how important it is to be proud of our ethnicity, culture, and identity. Shout out to Kuenzang, John, Rain, Lester, and Joao (he’s Brazillian, but we made him an honorary Asian). Accepting myself for who I really was led me down a path of healing, which helped me uncover my true passion in life — screenwriting.

In June 2024, I graduated from UCLA's MFA Screenwriting Program, where I discovered my passion for scripted comedy and realized my past was a gold mine for writing satire that has just as much soul as it does absurdity.
